An NFL team drafts 10 players, sign 15 free agents, 44 players from last year, 20 players from taxi squad, and scouted an average of 4,000 college players each year. How many candidates do you look at?

Follow these 48 Keys to Good Hiring Practices

           :

Avoid 3-minute “snap, emotional” decisions (first impression by appearance, personality, experience, etc.) and ending the interview by selling the candidate on the job.

Select on basis of talents/behavior and chemistry––least important is experience, but it is a mistake to avoid putting too much emphasis on experience.

Develop job profile––talents/behavior, chemistry, and experience (must and wants, compared analysis or testing). Measure against job profile.

Hire enough to become objective. Avoid emotional decisions (use others to interview for you, a team of people). The more you hire, the less emotional you get.

Interview the wife of the candidate (your wife helps).

Pay referral fee to your employee for finding employees (candidates).

Put a sign out front: “help needed.”

Hire a consultant or full-time personnel director if hiring 30+ people a year.

Use screener for all candidates by phone or in person.

Develop a list of must-haves and wants in candidates.

Measure attitude (by interview or testing or questions, i.e., Are you lucky? Blessed?)

Use open-ended questions in the interview process. Get deep. Ask for examples of accomplishments.

Use the same interview process for each candidate––same questions and procedure.

            Scorecard for each candidate.

Measure honesty (reference, testing or situational interviewing).

Video/record interviews (delegate listening when not in room or face-to-face). Avoid snap decisions.

            Perform a background investigation.

            Perform a credit check.

Look for people who have overcome failure.

Always check references (never personal friends––either former employer/manager).

            Medical exam if over 40.

Ask for last tax return (your accountant to review).

            Don’t overemphasize education or degrees.

Use the grabber headline in an ad (experiment and test for best response rate).

Listen to the candidate in the interview. Take notes.

Interview by phone before paying for an on-site interview from out of town.

Do a comparative analysis of candidates

Look for energy level (hours worked).

Look for aggressive behaviors in managers using DISC model.

Negotiate with personnel firm/headhunter over price/term and responsibility in writing. Expect personnel firm to replace a person who is hired then leaves before a six-month period.

Always hire on 3-month probationary period or as a consultant.

Use your network in hiring. Write/call others to ask who they know that is available. List your friends, associates, and competitors in brainstorming list of possible candidates.

Ask your salespeople or associates in other cities for best competitive people employed by others who might work for your firm.

Use situational (simulations) interviews to measure reactions of candidates to the job and their ability to make decisions.

Consider the reverse interview (ask him what expects in a job, wants most, etc.) to measure what motivates, interests in work.

            Build a culture with future.

Use employee applications to measure honesty (Walker example).

Use disclaimer at end of the application.

Create a pamphlet explaining opportunities, job, and qualifications for candidates (they will say good things to others who may want to apply).

Let candidates screen themselves out before your interview by reviewing your rules/policies/mission/culture/expectations in advance.

Use a non-compete contract for hiring.

Employ people through a temporary agency to try them and then continue with a temp agency for six months once you have decided on them (that covers commission).

Have executives sign an agreement to repay moving expenses if they resign within 2 years.

Hire part-time people as independent contractors to save money in appropriate jobs.

Employ executives as consultants before beginning full time.

Avoid selling the candidate in the interview. That’s his job. Your job is to listen, learn and make a good decision.

Expect to spend one week per $2,000 of salary you expect to pay to find the right person.

Avoid P.O. Box use for responding to your ad––time is too important. Set up a special e-mail address for candidates/job or use fax.

We interviewed Ken Blanchard, an American author and management expert, in 2007. This was part of Wise Counsel's "Ask God about My Business" internet radio campaign. During the campaign, we surveyed over 300 existing and future Entrepreneurs. We asked the question: "If you could ask God questions about your business success, what would they be?" We then boiled the 300 responses down to the Ten Questions and asked each of the 5 men we interviewed the same questions.

Pat Morley came from a tough family environment. But, it helped motivate him to be of the top real estate developers in Florida in the 1990s. He dressed like he was on the cover of GQ Magazine and was very active in the Orlando community. Morley started a small Bible study at a local restaurant and is still teaching it today 30 years later, except it has grown from 25 attendees to 300 every week.

Shark Tank is one of the most popular shows on television. It was started in Japan as “dragon den” and then went to Canada. It’s about inspiring people in business and raise capital. God is in the midst of all of this. Everybody who has been in business has been through ups and downs, including our host, John Beehner. God is in the midst of all of your business endeavors. If you want to sustain your business, you must follow God’s principles. His grace will allow you to make mistakes for a limited amount of time, but that grace will end.

THE J.C. PENNEY LEGACY… AN EXAMPLE FOR US

J.C. Penney was an incredibly successful businessman. He learned a great deal from his father, who was a pastor. His first three stores, beginning in the mining town of Kemmerer, Wyoming, were called the Golden Rule Stores. Within 15 years, his business grew so rapidly that he added 350 stores to the chain. Then he left the company he had founded because he thought he had the “Midas Touch” to turn anything into a success.

But Jim's next visions failed from the stock market crash of 1929, and he lost 90% of his personal wealth. So at 54, suffering from shingles and depression, he was on his deathbed in a hospital. In humility, he reached out to God again and asked for forgiveness. This prompted a deeply spiritual encounter that caused him to surrender to Christ, anew. The Lord showed him that He was growing the J.C. Penney Company, not himself. He realized he was just a vessel of the Lord to serve people and customers for His greater purposes.

This became his secret to success - yielding completely to God's plan. From that encounter, he discovered His greatest plan of ministering and coaching other businessmen. He was an inspiration for thousands. Instead of dying in his hospital bed at 53, he went on to live to be 95, reenergized and healed for a great and new undertaking.

God's plan for your life and pursuing His calling will change your life through peace, love, and joy. The Lord works in the hearts of businessmen and women who receive His vision, whether they know him or not. But the Creator of heaven and earth is not gauging your success based on financial merits. Instead, your contribution to the Kingdom is grounded in your obedience to His calling and plan. In fact, He is laying up treasures in heaven for the work we do on earth.

            1. Strategic Planning

In the 1980’s, Truett Cathy and his company, Chick-Fil-A, had a decline in sales for the first time since its founding in 1946. The frustration led him to take his key staff and board members to a Strategic Planning session.

After two days of talking and praying, they agreed only on one thing…their Mission Statement: “To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us to have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-Fil-A.”

The employees chipped in to buy a bronze plaque of the Mission Statement for Truett, who secured it near the front door of their new headquarters building. Since that one act, sales growth took off, heading toward $2 billion this year.

President Dwight Eisenhower once said, “Plans are often worthless, yet the planning process is priceless.”

God blesses companies based on their effective communication, relationships, love, calling, and talents aligning with His plan and grace. We have researched the Bible and uncovered the Cornerstone Paradigm. This is a planning process that defines the Solid Foundation the Bible describes for each of us and our businesses.

In a problem-solving session, Jim Failor remarked about the absence of a key member of our team. This man with great insights said, “CEOs do what they want to do.” In other words, it’s about our priorities and whom we report to…ourselves…or God and His calling.

The biggest time trap for entrepreneurs is picking up monkeys from their employees. Per the legendary Bill Oncken, “Too many executives back into the future, keeping their eyes on those things they have done well or love to do (pick up the decisions of their subordinates) rather than turning around and facing the future…those things they still do not know how to do, but face the future with a willingness to fail and humbly grow from them.”

A personal trust and relationship in Jesus Christ is about stepping out in faith (risk) and allowing Him to lead when it doesn’t always make logical sense. He is the priority.

            2. Marketing Principles

Sound business economics says any business can be good at Quality, Service, or Price. But you can only be best at 2 out of 3. You pick which two. You can’t have the best quality and service and have the best price. To have the best price, you have to sacrifice at being the best at quality or service. You can’t have all three and make money. Wal-Mart and others try, but it never works.

The key point here is that in marketing your product or services, you need to find your niches and not try to please everyone. This perspective is totally harmonious with the Bible. God has a special plan for each of our businesses and us. It means to be unique in the market, find the things that set you apart from your competition.

This is about finding your calling––God’s plan, niche, and purpose for your service to Him and your fellow man. Once you know the calling, the passion will be created by Him and the marketing strategy will become clearer and clearer. Test market your plan with your Advisory Group.

Every organization needs outstanding people in “Game Breaker” positions, i.e., sales manager, CFO, Quality Control, EVP…you decide for your organization.

Too often top executives make the mistake of hiring too fast and terminating too slowly. Because CEO’s don’t hire often enough, they never get good at it. They often hire the best of a few choices but rather, should find more candidates, become more patient, pray for God to send good candidates before and during the process, interview and screen three different ways and take your wife and the best candidate’s wife to dinner.

What the Lord has shown me about many people that fit long term. I like xxxx people and many times I have prayed, “Lord should I hire this person?” Most often I hear “Yes.” Sometimes that’s self will, often times I am certain it’s from the Lord. But here’s what I’ve recognized

           God Loves Everyone

. I hire people who don’t work, not for what they can do to help us, but how I can minister to them into their life. *Some people are here for a reason, to prepare them for the next step God has for them. Others are let go for the value of their “wake-up call.” Many need that and God wants to break all of “our will” to prepare us for “His will” to be done. It’s part of the Journey to each of us. Key for Hiring Key Executives is getting confirmation from outsiders, yet multiple opinions. Do not just trust you always.

In the 1970’s, a national talk show host named Mike Douglass interviewed a top sales trainer named “Wayne.” Immediately, Mike asked Wayne to sell him the ashtray on the coffee table. Wayne asked Mike, “Why would you want to buy it?” Mike gave three or four reasons (looks, practical use, and size). Wayne then asked, “What would you be willing to pay for it?” Mike thought for a while and explained why he would be willing to pay $75. Wayne said, “Sold.”

As simple as that example is, too many of us forget how critical the interview or question stage in a sale is because we are too busy explaining all the features and benefits without getting into the head/need of the prospect.

The real purpose of sales is to HELP someone fulfill a need. It’s as simple as the Golden Rule…giving as Christ did. “Give and it is given unto you,” (i.e., in referrals, demonstrating rapport, trust, and relationship building).

The greatest power and motivation in any business is through love. Love defined not as the physical type, but as empathy, caring, serving, and praising. Love and the Golden Rule is what drives the success of American marketing and customer focus. We follow leaders. As employers, we have to deal with the heart and soul of those we employ in attempting to motivate them. Reference: Where does motivation begin?

Wes Cantrell, CEO of Lanier Worldwide, says his father was his inspiration in life. As a pastor, His father had been terminated by his church in a shocking course of events. Friends encouraged his father to be bitter, get back at them, and hold onto resentment. Instead, he was forgiving and later went back to the same church to teach Sunday School as a volunteer for many years. Wes says, my father was my greatest inspiration and motivation in building my faith and relationship with Christ.

Experts agree motivation comes from within…from our heart and spirit. We never make a major decision without feeling the sensitivity of our heart. We are motivated to work, follow orders, desire to love…or to skip work, call in sick, rebel against the boss’s desires, or harbor resentment.

Yet He would much prefer to work through the Love of the Holy Spirit to Inspire our hearts (convict each of our hearts to follow His ways and plans). If we are not led by the spirit, the battle between our Soul and Spirit keeps us in conflict, in the self-centered nature–– condemned to not change or step out in faith. We are then more moved by fear, pride, envy…being in control rather than love, peace, faith, and joy.

In a business, motivating employees is about creating a culture where they are convinced to work and live by your rules, environment, teamwork, and to win together (manipulation). Manipulation by using the Golden Rule and love of Christ in us plus vision, purpose, winning by being on a loving team.

Not necessarily. God’s math is only the same when He wants it to be. Since “He is in control of everything on heaven and earth,” our logic often goes out the window. Our alignment with his principles and calling are key.

He uses pain, frustration, adversity, and suffering to teach us new things. Business Owners/Executives losing money is very painful and alarming. We are losing control (man’s greatest fear is the pride of being embarrassed).

Through the years of difficult business, I’ve had to work out a financial problem because I was off track (out of His grace). But as I work toward getting back into “His good graces,” through pain, prayer, and hard work, the cash flow gradually reappears…even when I didn’t yet deserve it.

As an example, Hugh Jones, former CEO of a major bank in Florida, tells about the slowness of growth and the incompatibility of his staff in performing to his expectations. Yet, a highly respected colleague recommended a mission, which seemed to have no relevance. To get his staff involved in volunteerism through various community activities.

Gradually, out of his own desire to give back and be a leader in the community, things began to change internally as well. As his staff became involved together, their attitude and sense of teamwork improved. The new camaraderie that developed resulted in improved bank performance. Increase communication brought a new level of mutual respect, even new passion, in their city.

At the same time, the bank’s income grew and profits doubled with no increase in their sales effort. Hugh Jones sensed a spiritual anointing in what became one of the best all-around banks in the nation.

Guy Ianello was raised by a good Italian family in upstate New York. Somehow in high school he got caught up in drugs, using and then selling them. After graduating, he had no incentive to find a real job until he got caught and was sentenced to life in prison. But after 6 months, he was released on a technicality.

After his release, he tried a few jobs but then drifted back into pushing drugs. He made very good money. Then he met his wife and they moved to the Orlando area to try and make a new life together. But selling drugs was too easy. His greatest fear was being caught and sent to prison for life. As the pressure built and more and more deals made good money and frustrations with his wife (who finally left him), he was finally caught again with guns and plenty of drugs for sale.

People had witnessed to him about Christ but he always rejected it. But out on bail and before being sentenced, he went to church with a friend. He was moved and gripped with fear of going to prison, so after church, he went into his backyard with his dog and cried out to the Lord for forgiveness. Weeping hysterically, he admitted his lies and sins.

As he did this, a big cloud enveloped him and it became more and more intense. He felt a profound inner pressure building inside and at the same time great peace. Finally, after 15 minutes there was a great burst like his head had exploded. As he began to open his eyes, the cloud around him began to lift. He first heard and then saw his dog barking at this huge snake all curled up in his yard. He spoke out,

           “Oh Lord what is that?”

Then the Lord spoke to him and said,

He was no longer the property of an evil curse, but he found Freedom in Christ from the inside out. That life-changing event transformed Guy completely. He hungered with a passion for the word and convinced his wife he was a changed man. So she took him back. He studied intently for 3 years.

This humorous audio is a timeless classic in management education. Corporations have used the course content internally for decades. Hal Burrows is a retired management professional and speaker who spoke nationally on managing time. The Oncken Corporation has offered the course. The Harvard Business Review printed the article by the same name, written by Bill Oncken and Don Wass, and was considered the most reprinted article in its history. The language Hal uses is rough at times, but the illustrations are classic. Many managers fail to delegate and get the best out of their people, which ultimately hurts organizations.

Genesis features real-life stories of respected entrepreneurs and companies that have worked toward becoming highly effective in the marketplace, whether they knew Christ or not. Men and women like J.C Penney, Conrad Hilton, Ray Kroc, Kraft Foods and Nike, just to name a few, are featured with 50 other examples. E-workbooks on this site are available with all the graphics.

John's conclusion is that the Truth of God works in all aspects of business and life, regardless of whether or not you believe in God or His son, regardless of whether or not you like the truth, and regardless of whether or not you have heard the truth. The Bible says, “My people are ruined for lack of knowledge!” (Hosea 4:6) The Lord uses all types of people to build businesses through His Visions and Grace because he needs employers and products/services for His people to grow and prosper. There are no requirements that a business owner is committed to serving Christ, but he will have to follow the Lord's principals to be successful long-term, because "Grace Periods" will end for those out of His will.

Steve Jobs rose to become one of our most successful entrepreneurs in recent history. This is part of an early interview is his Apple career where he talks about the initiative he took as a 12-year-old. It's what he perceives as a key difference between those who fail and those who succeed. Perfect application for what the Lord is trying to do with each of us. Risk and failure are part of life; Risk takers win at life. Reference

This short video tells the story of the founding of Nike by Bill Bowerman and his former miler Phil Knight, who still leads the company today. Visions come to many people from God our Creator to make a better world. Many people reject the ideas of taking the risk that Bill took because they feel insecure or inferior and ill-equipped. This short story comes from the Workshop series

Steve Jobs was faced with some of the worst rocky soil experiences ever when he was fired in 1985 from Apple, the company he co-founded. But he never stopped innovating. It was in his nature. No one predicted the iPod, iPhone, or iPad.

“Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

Not only is character essential to an individual's personal life, it is essential in the person’s business life. The decisions we make, the people we associate with, and what we expose ourselves to, in the form of information and education, will form the basis of our character.

How & Why Good Business Creates True Wealth

took three years to develop and was completed in 2006. It was formerly called Genesis: The Business Workshop. It contains 13 different 30-minutes video chapters. Each chapter is split into roughly 10-minute sections to allow for healthy discussion between videos. The foundation comes from the Bible and True Wealth…By the Book, authored by John Beehner, founder of Wise Counsel.

It is based on many of his insights from studying the Word, and practical experiences of working with hundreds of CEOs and companies over 15 years.

In 2006, TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie befriended children in a village in Argentina and saw that they didn’t have adequate shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes for a child in need. One for One.

What began as a simple idea has evolved into a powerful business model helping address need, and also advance health, education and economic opportunity for children and their communities around the world.
